This assessment provides a comprehensive review of Fiji's policy, legal and institutional frameworks relevant to Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in the forestry and coastal resilience sectors. Developed under the PPIN Project, the report examines how existing legislation, policies, strategies and governance arrangements support ecosystem-based approaches for climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
The assessment identifies key strengths within Fiji's policy landscape, including strong foundations in ecosystem-based adaptation, ridge-to-reef management, community-based resource governance and Indigenous land and marine tenure systems. It also highlights gaps and barriers that limit the effective implementation and scaling of Nature-based Solutions, including institutional fragmentation, coordination challenges, financing constraints and limited monitoring frameworks.
Drawing on policy analysis and stakeholder consultations, the report provides evidence-based recommendations and a strategic roadmap to strengthen NbS integration across national planning, legislation, environmental management, forestry, coastal protection and development processes. The assessment serves as a practical resource for policymakers, practitioners and development partners seeking to advance Nature-based Solutions within Fiji's climate resilience and sustainable development agenda.
