Below is a summary of the main activities of the tree inventory at Aku Farm, within the framework of the PEBACC+ project in the Tagabe River Basin, Vanuatu.
Objectives and Methods:
- The project conducted a comprehensive inventory of the number, species, and condition of seedlings on 33 hectares at Aku Farm.
- Identified areas of tree loss and the causes of damage to implement remedial measures.
- The project followed the process of obtaining consent (FPIC) from landowners and representatives of Aku Farm before implementation.
Inventory Results:
- A total of 1,673 healthy trees were recorded in the field.
- The tree species included: Whitewood (1,178 trees), Mahogany (439 trees), Kauri (17 trees), and Natangura Palm (39 trees).
Maintenance and Restoration:
- Approximately 8.6 hectares require bi-weekly maintenance to remove weeds and harmful vines.
- Approximately 0.94 hectares need replanting, with an estimated 300 seedlings needed.
- Main threats to the crops include invasive weeds, traces of wild boars, and damage from the coconut rhinoceros beetle.
Next Steps:
- Coordinate with the Forestry Department's nursery to provide 300 seedlings for replanting.
- Develop a specific replanting plan and implement routine maintenance in the planted areas.
- Continue to encourage the participation of local youth in maintenance and restoration activities.
