Tool
The Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) Toolkit for Comprehensive Disaster and Climate Risk Management (CRM) aims to support countries in integrating NbS into Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) planning in a coordinated manner. This toolkit supports the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. NbS refers to actions that protect, conserve, restore, and sustainably manage ecosystems to address social, economic, and environmental challenges while delivering benefits in welfare and biodiversity.
The toolkit comprises five main tools designed to complement each other in the planning process:
- Tool 1 (Information Synthesis): Supports the synthesis of environmental, climate, natural hazard, exposure, and vulnerability data to assess the national context. This process utilizes the IPCC risk framework to analyze complex interactions.
- Tool 2 (State Assessment): Provides a list of keywords to determine the level of integration of NbS concepts in existing policies and plans at the national and local levels.
- Tool 3 (Solution Selection): Guides the selection of NbS interventions based on specific disaster types and ecosystem characteristics to optimize CRM benefits.
- Tool 4 (Inclusive Governance): Supports the identification of stakeholders and promotes transparent, inclusive governance processes, ensuring meaningful participation of communities and rights groups.
- Tool 5 (Planning Integration): Provides an overview of how NbS is integrated into the policies of pioneering countries (such as Bangladesh, Kiribati, Vanuatu), helping to adapt and optimize planning for each country.
