IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions

IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions

The IUCN Global Standard for Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) is a framework designed to support the verification, design, and scaling of NbS projects globally. Nature-Based Solutions are defined as actions that protect, sustainably manage, and restore ecosystems, thereby effectively addressing societal challenges while benefiting people and biodiversity.

This standard aims to establish a consistent mechanism that enhances transparency and investor confidence and creates a common language for stakeholders, including governments, businesses, and non-governmental organizations.

The framework of the Standard includes eight core criteria:

  • NbS solutions effectively address societal challenges.
  • NbS designs are built on considerations of scale.
  • NbS must deliver net benefits to biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. The solution must ensure economic viability.
  • The governance process must be inclusive, transparent, and empower stakeholders.
  • NbS needs to strike a fair balance between the primary objective and the provision of various other benefits.
  • The solutions are adaptively managed based on scientific evidence.
  • NbS must be sustainable and integrated into the appropriate jurisdictional context.
  • The application of the Standard is based on a self-verification method, allowing users to evaluate their projects against specific criteria and indicators. This tool helps identify gaps and make recommendations for improvement to ensure the quality and sustainability of NbS projects.
